DM - The Basics for a 1v1 - by _2_LaY_Z_

In 1v1 you don't have an ally which means you have to expect an attack from any where at anytime. In order to win a 1v1 you must collect as many

resources as possible and control as much of the map as you possibly can. The easiest way to control (and keep control) of your land is by containing your enemy. How you ask? Apply pressure to your enemy as soon as you possibly can.  When the game first starts, send your hussar to kill as many villagers as possible. This will slow down the production of your enemy's military (i.e. killing villagers building houses or killing villagers which are building stables, barracks, etc..). Since the usual 1v1 civilizations are Huns, Franks, or Mayans, these are the civilizations I will go into.

The Huns' "Korean" Strategy, explained HERE, keeps your enemy on defense at all times. Every time you send another 40 units to your enemy, it allows you more time to gain map control, and create a good economy, which will then allow you to have more gold, therefore having a larger army later in the game. Even though it is evident your army will die, keep it going. It will keep him on defense which will allow more resources for you to gather. While sending your units 40 at a time to your enemy, send 5 to 6 villagers to the outskirts of his town and build castles. As soon as your castle is up start making trebuchets. After having a castle up, you should send your army back near them as your castles will rain arrows on your enemy. While your enemy is distracted at the front of his town, send some villagers to create a small (but effective) town to the side of your enemy.  Since he is paying attention to the battle in front, he probably won't notice the town to the side. After creating a stable army, you can then flank your enemy and destroy your enemy's houses (not included against another Hun), and maybe even some villagers. To insure that you have enough gold to finish your enemy, make market early and sell your wood (and food if you feel necessary).  Make a second and third town center to create more villagers faster. Also you must mine stone. Castles are very important late in the game when the only units that are able to be built are skirmishers, halberdier, and hussars.

The Mayans are also most effective when on the offense, so try to keep it that way. Always keep eagle warriors in or near your enemy's town. At the beginning of the game you must try to get market first as almost all Mayan games depend on who got the most gold from the market. Sell wood and food.  After getting a barracks up, set gather point in the BACK of your enemy's town. This will keep his military distracted away from the front, and you may even be able to kill a few villagers while you're at it. For the rest of the barracks that are built, set gather points close to your enemy's town, but not close enough for him to notice anything big is about to happen. Send villagers to the eagle warriors who are waiting in front and begin to build castles. Out of the first castle make trebuchets, out of the second, third, and fourth, make plumed archers (and more trebuchets if you feel necessary). This should be fairly easy to do since every 15 seconds one of your eagle warriors will be running around in the back of his town, allowing you time to do this. Make a couple of more town centers to get more villagers faster and start cutting wood and mining gold as soon as possible. With a couple of villagers you will need to build an alternate town to the side of your enemy. In this town should be a town center, 3 or 4 barracks, and a castle. With the units created from these buildings, attack the houses and villagers. In a matter of minutes your enemy will be resigning shamefully.

The Franks are played almost exactly like the Mayans. Except instead of using eagle warriors (which Franks don't have), use paladins. Do the exact same thing as you would in a Mayan game. Instead of having plumed archers, however, the Franks have the throwing axeman. You will need to make these instead of the plumed archers. If you think you might run out of gold soon, you can make some pikemen too. Don't forget about making the smaller town to the side of your enemy. Forgetting to flank your enemy may result in a loss.

These, of course, are just basic strategies.
